Agnes McMenamy Gates (1810-1860)

Agnes McMenamy was born in 1810 in Scotland. She was also known as ‘Nancy’ but favoured ‘Ann/e’ later in life. In 1832 she was convicted of man robbery and sentenced to life imprisonment. The following year she was transported to the colony of New South Wales. Less than a year after her arrival she married fellow convict Joseph Gates (1812-1880). They had a son together and relocated to South Australia after Anne received her ticket of leave. She would go on to receive a conditional pardon and die in the Adelaide Hills.
