Biography

Mary was the daughter of John Skivington (1709-1779) and Jane Pit (-1778). She was baptised on 11 October 1743 within the parish of Shillingstone and probably in the Church of the Holy Rood.2Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue Shillingstone was also known as Shilling Okeford.

Mary married Benjamin Best (-1788) by licence on 17 May 1762 at Shillingstone. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Russell, husband of her sister Anne . Benjamin signed his name and Mary signed with her mark.3Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue Benjamin was from the parish of Wareham St Martin. Unfortunately, the parish register was destroyed in the Great Fire of Wareham on 25 July 1762 and with it, if Benjamin was born and baptised in the parish, Benjamin’s ancestry.4There is a note at the beginning of the new parish register which recounts this event: Church of ...continue Benjamin and Mary had the following known children:5Other children may exist. 2. George Best (bap.1771)
  3. Jenny Best (bap.1773)
  4. Jane Best (bur.1773)
  5. Susannah Best (bap.1776)
  6. Henrietta Best (bap.1780)
  7. Jenny Best (bap.1782)

It is highly likely that Jenny (bap.1773) and Jane (bur.1773) are the same person, given that Mary’s mother was known as ‘Jane’.

Mary and Benjamin’s known children were baptised at St Martin’s Church. This is interesting as, according to a note at the beginning of the register, after the great fire the church was “converted into a Receptacle for poor People” with baptisms and marriages taking place at St Marys. Furthermore, there is a seven year gap between their marriage and the first known baptism which suggests either several more children and/or a delay in recording their children’s baptisms.7Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 8Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 9Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 10Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 11Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 12Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 13Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 14Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue

Mary was also directed to pay her sisters Susanna £100 and Anne £5. What befell Mary is currently a mystery. She was approximately 45 years of age at the time of her husband’s death and she may have remarried. The search for her fate is ongoing.19This profile will be updated when more evidence comes to light.
