Biography

Thomas was the son of John Yeatman (1747-1821) and Jenny Skivington (1754-1828).3Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue He was born in mid-1797 in either Okeford Fitzpaine or Shillingstone. His father, a farmer and yeoman, had land holdings in both parishes. He was baptised on 20 August 1797 within the parish of Shillingstone and probably in the Church of the Holy Rood.4Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1813-1921”, ...continue

Thomas’ father, John, made a will on 1 March 1814 when Thomas was 16. His mother, Jane, and his older brother, John Yeatman (1791-1845), were executors of the estate and Thomas was made a tenant in common with his brother.5Church of England, “Dorset, England, Wills and Probates, 1565-1858”, Will of John ...continue John Yeatman died in 1821.6Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2010”, ...continue Thomas would go on to farm the leasehold land in Okeford Fitzpaine except for a two year period (1823-1824) when he leased a property in Ibberton. This was owned by Esau Mullett. At the time, Esau was leasing Hearly Farm in neighbouring Fifehead Neville. Esau was married to Jane Ridout of Holwell. A connection has yet to be established between Jane and Mary Ann, Thomas’ wife.7Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906”, ...continue 8Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906”, ...continue 9Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906”, ...continue 10Each year consists of two scanned pages. Thomas married Mary Ann Rideout on 28 May 1817 within the parish of Okeford Fitzpaine and probably in the church of St Andrew. The marriage was witnessed by his brother, John, and Jane Rideout. Thomas and Mary Ann married by banns and they signed their names. Mary Ann signed as ‘Yeatman’. This was scribbled out and an illegible annotation added. Also, the year as written is difficult to decipher and has been confused in some databases for 1816. Furthermore, Thomas would have been underage (at 19) and it is likely his bride was too.18Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1813-1921”, ...continue The rush to the altar may be explained by the arrival of their first child less than four months later.19Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906”, ...continue Thomas and Mary Ann had a total of five known children:20Other children may exist. Thomas left a young family. The daughter he never lived to see died later that year and within four years his widow had given birth to an illegitimate daughter, Lucy Yeatman (1831-1888).25Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2010”, ...continue 26Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906”, ...continue By 1841 the family had scattered.
