Biography

Mary was the daughter of George Skivington (-1711) and Mary Hallet (1672-1748). She was baptised on 18 May 1696 within the parish of Shillinge Ockford and probably in the Church of the Holy Rood.2Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue Shillinge Ockford was also known as Shilling Okeford and is now known as Shillingstone.

Mary married Henry Scrine on 28 October 1718 at Shillinge Ockford when she was approximately 22. They were married by licence. Henry was from the parish of Fovant in the county of Wiltshire.3Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue They had the following known children:4Other children certainly exist as there are large gaps between baptisms.

  1. John Scrine (bap.1724)
  2. Elizabeth Scrine (bap.1731)
  3. James Scrine (bap.1732)
  4. Jane Scrine (bap.1735)

Very little is known of the family. How Mary came to marry a man from a distant parish is unclear as nothing is known of Henry beyond where he was located at the time of the marriage and that he was also known as ‘Harry’.6Church of England, “Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue There is a significant gap between their marriage and the baptism of their first known child, John, in Fovant and it is unknown where they were residing in those intervening years.

All four known children were baptised in Fovant.7Church of England, “Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 8Church of England, “Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 9Church of England, “Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 10Church of England, “Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue 11The baptism dates have been adjusted according to our modern Gregorian calendar. John was baptised ...continue There are some interesting annotations to the register. John’s baptism year was recorded as ‘1723/4’ which is highly unusual and it is how modern-day family historians acknowledge the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. There is also a large asterix next to James’ entry which is of unknown significance.

Nothing further is known of the family after the baptism of Jane and the search continues. What may prevent any information coming to light is that contemporary record keepers had difficulty with the Scrine surname which was compounded when Henry moved away from his parish of origin. The scribe at Shillinge Ockford made a mistake and the blot over the entry makes his final decision illegible and it has been interpreted as ‘Skine’ over the years. Ancestry databases record the surname of ‘Sevine’. Another family in Fovant has the surname of ‘Crine’.12This profile will be updated when more evidence comes to light.
