He was careful to ensure that his assets remained within his family and those bequeathed to his daughters were the sole property of his daughters and not their (existing or future) husbands. Property bequeathed to his daughters (Amey, Mary and Eliza) was to pass to their children or, if a daughter died childless, pass to a named sibling. He also bequeathed legacies of twenty pounds to his grandchildren John Tapp (1807-1860), Richard Poyter (bap.1820-), Eleanor Poynter Osbaldiston (1820-1872), George David Poynter (1823-1850), James Poynter (1825-1884) and Mary Janet Poynter (1833-1921). At the time the will was made the Poynter children were underage and they were to receive their legacies after attaining the age of 21. John, who was already of age, would inherit within a year of the death of Amey.

John died later that year on 26 July 1837 in Dorchester at the age of 83.14Anon., ‘Births, Marriages and Deaths.’, Sherborne Mercury, 31 July 1837, p. 3, c. 6, ...continue He was buried on 31 July 1837 at St George, Fordington.15Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2010’, ...continue
