Edith was the daughter of James Chaplin (1860-1932) and Mary Gates (1865-1955). She was born on 24 January 1886 at Upper Sturt.6Jan Thomas (ed.), South Australian births, index of registrations 1842 to 1906, Adelaide, South … Continue reading She was registered as ‘Sarah Edith’ but was known as ‘Edith Sara’.
 
Edith trained as a nurse at the Adelaide Hospital. She enlisted (at the age of 31 years and seven months) in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 24 August 1917. Less than three months later she was transferred to Sydney and from there, on 31 December 1917, she boarded the Glasgow for England. She worked in various hospitals in England for two years before returning to Australia on the Shropshire.
