Biography

Betty was the daughter of Edward Woodsford (1698-1776) and Thomasin Hitchcock (1704-1784). She was baptised on 30 July 1738 within the parish of Compton Valence and possibly in the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury.2Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, … Continue reading

Betty was residing in Fordington by 1762 and she may have been living with her sister, Mary, who had married Sebastian Pitfield of Fordington in 1756.3Church of England, “Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, … Continue reading Betty may have been brought in to assist Mary with the care of her two children who tragically died within months of each other in 1761. Or, she may have been living with relatives of her mother, Thomasin, who was originally from Dorchester.

On 29 December 1762 Betty married Thomas Arden at St Peter’s.4Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, … Continue reading This was a prestigious match. Thomas’ father, Daniel Arden, was (at that time) the twice-elected Mayor of Dorchester.5Michael Russell, ‘The ARDEN Family of Dorchester’, Dorset Online Parish Clerks, April … Continue reading

Betty and Thomas subsequently disappear from known records. Michael Russell, Online Parish Clerk for Dorchester and Fordington, has been unable to locate any further information on Thomas (and, presumably, his wife Betty). He has hypothesised that Thomas died young as he was not mentioned in his father’s will of 1755 (prior to this marriage). Another hypothesis is that Thomas may have already been comfortably provided for or out of favour given that Betty has also disappeared from known records and is not mentioned in her father’s will. Or, they may have established a home in a different county or emigrated.7Michael Russell, ‘The ARDEN Family of Dorchester’, Dorset Online Parish Clerks, April … Continue reading
