Biography

Eliza was the daughter of John Summers Jacob and Amey Pitfield. She was baptised on 22 August 1801 at Holy Trinity, Dorchester.3Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue

Eliza never married and, as a consequence, few formal records remain. She was in her fortieth year when she was recorded on the 1841 census. At that time, she was living with her mother, Amey, and her niece, Mary Janet. Mary Janet (possibly known to her family as Janet) was the daughter of Eliza’s sister, Eleanor, who died when she was three. Amey, Eliza and Janet shared at home on High West Street, Dorchester with a servant and two drapers whose (likely) board provided additional income.4”1841 England Census”, digital image, Eliza Jacob, Holy Trinity, Dorchester, Dorset, England; ...continue

Amey died in 1850 and Eliza and Janet were dispatched to Eliza’s brother, John, who had a house at 5 Wellington Terrace Radipole. By the time the 1851 census was taken on the night of 30 March 1851, John’s home had become a haven for his widowed and spinster siblings.5’1851 England Census’, digital image, Household of John Jacobs, Radipole, Sarum, ...continue Eliza, however, was not destitute and relying on her brother for support. She had some form of income in her own right which she may have inherited on the death of her mother.

At the time of her death at the age of 90 at Radipole (on 19 December 1857) her effects were recorded as being under £1500. John was the executor of her will.6Principal Probate Registry, “England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills ...continue Eliza was buried at St George, Fordington on 29 December 1857.7Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2010’, ...continue
