John was the son of Joseph Gates (1812-1880) and Agnes McMenamy (1810-1860). Did his parents wish to avoid alerting South Australian officials to the real location of John’s birth or did they wish to hide their criminal histories? We will never know.

Three of John and Ellen’s children married siblings: the children of Thomas Morris (1834-1918) and Sophia Warhurst (1837-1912). Robert married Annie Morris, Emily married William Morris, and Alexander married Maude Morris.
