Biography

Edward may have been the son of Edward Woodsford (-1699) and Johannah Legg (-1713). This deduction is based on the baptisms of his eldest children (who were also baptised in the parish of Compton Valence). It is impossible to know this with absolute certainty as the parish records for Toller Porcorum prior to 1758 have not survived. If Edward was their son he was born on 7 November 1698 at Compton Valence and baptised on 22 November 1698 within the parish of Compton Valence and possibly in the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury.5Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, ...continue

Edward was a Yeoman in possession of freehold property and assets which he detailed in his last will and testament dated 9 April 1776. He owned a house and orchard named ‘Dimonds Dale’, and ‘two Closes of Meadow’ named ‘Woodhays’ and ‘Heathfield’ and a further ‘Close of Meadow’ named ‘Fernehay’. All were located within the parish of Toller Porcorum.6Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Wills and Probates, 1565-1858’, Will of Edward Woodsford, ...continue

Edward married Thomasin Hitchcock on 8 January 1734 within the parish of West Compton and probably at the Church of St Michael.7This is the adjusted date according to our modern Gregorian calendar. 8Somerset & Dorset Family History Society, ‘Dorset Marriages’, Findmypast, ...continue They had the following known children:9Other children may exist.
