James was the son of Edward Woodsford (1698-1776) and Thomasin Hitchcock (1704-1784). On the death of his father, Edward, in 1776 James inherited the freehold estate of Dimonds Dale in Toller Porcorum (where he was already in residence) and three ‘closes of meadow’ named Woodhays, Heathfield and Fernehay (all in Toller Porcorum).4Church of England, ‘Dorset, England, Wills and Probates, 1565-1858’, Will of Edward ...continue Following his inheritance, James featured prominently in the land tax records for Toller Porcorum.
